How to Calculate Engagement Rate on Instagram
The most common way, and the one this calculator uses, is engagement per post as a share of your followers.
Example: an account with 5,000 followers whose posts get 180 likes and 12 comments on average has an engagement rate of (180 + 12) ÷ 5,000 × 100 = 3.8%.
Use averages over your recent posts rather than a single post: one viral post or one quiet day can skew the number a lot. Ten to twelve posts give a good picture.
Why Instagram Insights shows something different: Insights can calculate engagement by reach (the people who actually saw a post) instead of followers. Reach is only visible to the account owner, so to compare accounts with each other, engagement by followers is the standard.
What Is a Good Engagement Rate on Instagram?
Engagement rates drop as accounts grow, so compare yourself with accounts of a similar size.
| Followers | Room to grow | Typical | Strong |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 10K | below 2.8% | 2.8 – 5.2% | above 5.2% |
| 10K – 100K | below 1.8% | 1.8 – 3.3% | above 3.3% |
| 100K – 1M | below 1.2% | 1.2 – 2.2% | above 2.2% |
| Over 1M | below 0.8% | 0.8 – 1.4% | above 1.4% |
Approximate ranges for engagement by followers. Rates also vary by niche and content type, so treat them as a guide.
How to Improve Your Engagement Rate
- Post consistently. At least once a week keeps you in your followers' feeds. Long gaps cost reach.
- Write captions. A sentence or a question gives people a reason to comment and helps Instagram understand your post.
- Use 3–5 relevant hashtags. A few specific hashtags help new people find you; long generic lists don't.
- Mix in reels. Reels reach people who don't follow you yet. Check your audit to see which format works best for you.
- Reply to comments. Conversations under your post count as engagement and bring people back.
- Give new posts a strong start. Engagement in the first hours decides how far a post travels. Our plans add likes, comments or views to every new post automatically.
Frequently Asked Questions
About the engagement rate calculator and the account audit.
It depends on your size. For accounts under 10K followers, around 3 to 5% is typical and above 5% is strong. Larger accounts naturally have lower rates: over 1M followers, around 1% is typical. See the benchmark table above.
Add up the average likes and comments per post, divide by your follower count and multiply by 100. For example, 192 interactions per post on an account with 5,000 followers is a 3.8% engagement rate.
Yes. The quick calculator works right away, without signing up. The full account audit is free too; you only sign in with your email so we can keep your results in your dashboard.
The audit fetches and analyses your latest 12 posts, the standard sample for engagement rate: recent enough to show how your account performs today. Each check takes real work, so each account can run a few audits per day. Signing in with your email (a one-time code, no password) lets us keep it free and fair. No payment details needed.
Yes, any public Instagram account can be analysed, for example a competitor or a creator you'd like to work with. Private accounts can't be analysed.
Insights can base engagement on reach, the number of people who saw a post, which only the account owner can see. This calculator uses followers, the standard for comparing accounts, so the numbers can differ.
